Poster debut for Johnny Depp & Michael Mann team-up: Public Enemies
Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about.
Feast your eyes on the one-sheet for one of my most highly-awaited releases of 2009, Public Enemies, acclaimed director Michael Mann’s meticulously-detailed period thriller about the notorious tommy-gun-toting, Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp, obviously) and the driven FBI agent who vows to take him down, Melvin Purvis (portrayed by our favorite ranter, Christian Bale).
The iconic poster is obviously trading on Depp’s undeniable star wattage (including a kinda innuendo-laden crotch-level title placement) rather than the director’s status as, in my opinion, a first-rate filmmaker, especially of great Chicago stories like this one. (Anyone else love his sleek 1981 crime drama Thief as much as me?) But, hey, I’m not complaining. If this promo gets more people to shell out bucks to see a Michael Mann pic, then more power to Universal Pictures’s marketing department.
Public Enemies is scheduled for a July 1, 2009 release.
