Bollywood meets kung-fu in Chandni Chowk To China
Indian pop cinema has meshed with martial arts and kung-fu talents before (the 2006 superhero fantasy Krrish comes immediately to mind, for example), but Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is set to bring that cross-cultural movie mash-up even further with Chandni Chowk to China.
The action-comedy (and, yes, musical) is about a simple cook from Chandni Chowk whom some oppressed villagers believe to be a reincarnation of an ancient, revered warrior. What makes this project potentially exciting for die-hard fans is that it also stars the unmatched powerhouse Mithun Chakraborty and — yes! — Gordon Liu, the legendary martial arts maestro from chop-socky classics like The 36th Chamber and My Young Auntie, not to mention Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
You can visit the film’s official website, or watch the trailer. Chandni Chowk To China is slated for a January 16, 2009 release.
