The name’s 20. K-20.
It doesn’t have the same zing as Double-Oh-Seven, but who knows, maybe K-20: Kaijin Nijû Mensô Den (a.k.a. K-20: The Fiend with Twenty Faces), a new Japanese superhero-style action/fantasy, will deliver the same kind of thrills as Mr. Bond.
Asian cinema heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro stars in Shimako Sato’s alternate universe fantasy in which a 1949 quasi-Euro-Japanese metropolis in controlled by a ruthless ruling class. Into the financially-stifled society leaps “the Fiend,” a masked vigilante who engages in all sorts of Robin Hood-styled derring-do in an attempt to equalize the economic disparity. When a circus acrobat (Kaneshiro) is set up to take the fall for the Fiend’s crimes, the former sets out on a quest to uncover the masked man’s true identity and clear his name.
K-20 looks like it’ll be slick and packed with effects, which could either make it a solid entertainment or an all-flash-no-substance yawner. If you’re curious, you can check out the official website which features two trailers (all in Japanese, unfortunately). The movie’s slated for release in Japan on December 20, 2008.
