Primed to get under your skin: The Burrowers
Indie horror filmmaker J.T. Petty, who directed the low-budget shockers Soft for Digging and S&Man, makes his return to the big screen and the genre with the Western monster movie The Burrowers.
Starring Karl Geary (who headlined Petty’s forgettable Mimic: Sentinel) and fan-favoritate Clancy Brown, this rip-roaring yarn about a Dakota plains town plagued by nasty critters dwelling underneath the frontier plays tonight (Sept. 9) and Thursday afternoon (Sept. 11) at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. The monster at the top of this posting is an early concept for one of the titular fiends.
Petty’s movies are ones that often have ideas that surpass their overall execution, but I have my hopes high for this one. I’m especially fond of genre mash-ups, like those of prolific fiction writer Joe R. Lansdale, and The Burrowers seems to fall squarely into that category-busting category.
You can read the festival listing and schedule information here, and watch the trailer here. Petty’s official website (which hasn’t been updated in about a year, perhaps because of this film) can be visited here.
