Klaatu barada nikto!
The trend of remaking classic or even not-so-classic Hollywood movies is apparently continuing full-steam-ahead. Case in point: The Day the Earth Stood Still, a revamping of the Robert Wise-helmed sci-fi landmark from 1951.
Take a look at the brand new trailer, here.
It’s apparently tagged onto screenings of Hancock, if you have a yen to see it on the big screen. I suppose the newer version intends to transpose the originals cold war paranoia to our nation’s more current tensions stemming from the Iraq conflict. How successful that alteration is going to be remains to be seen. Who knows, maybe allegory will go straight out the window in favor of simply Blowing Things Up Real Good.
To its credit, however, the remake looks nothing like the original, thus dodging the crutch of being a simple, straight-forward rehashing of material. And there is a twisted brilliance to the fact that the filmmakers somehow managed to cast Johnny Utah himself as the space alien Klaatu.
